About Hambleton Handyman
Hambleton Handyman is a home services repair/handyman company, but we take on more than your typical run-of-the-mill home projects. Our team is capable of taking on full-blown remodeling projects, and can obviously knock out any handyman tasks that come with that. We do everything from small repairs (like a simple hole in the wall) all the way through to full bathroom, kitchen, and deck remodels. We like to send experts to our clients who can do anything inside or outside of their homes!
In the Washington DC area, a lot of our clients are government employees where their home is also their office. It’s a lot of older, historic homes. Given the price of building a new home - our customers opt to repair and maintain the space they are in!
Repeat customers make up as much as 30% of our business. It’s essential for us to have happy clients who call us time and time again! We patch a hole, and while doing it, also can provide them with an estimate for a kitchen remodel or whatever they need. Building trust from the very first call is essential.
Our mission is happy paying clients that call us back time and time again. With us, it’s not about individual projects – it’s about the long-term relationships with our clients.
What is the key challenge in growing your business?
The number one issue is finding and retaining good talent! Skilled labor that we need to grow our business is already very scarce. Especially when you consider that we are looking for candidates who are already experts - this is a very hard person to find.
We need someone who not only has the skills, but also has the communication skill to make customers happy and wants to be with us for the long haul - we want our people to retire with us!
What were you doing to hire candidates before you started using Classet?
We primarily used a mix of Craigslist and Indeed. The result from both is that we would have to invest a ton of time in vetting the candidates that applied. We’d get maybe 50 applicants and then start going through them. After you look through the resumés, we find 30 people we wanted to call. 15 would pick up, and 6 of those would be scheduled for an in-person interview. 3 of those would not show up to the interview, so we would maybe get one hire as a result of all of that.
What was the process like to get started using Classet?
It was super simple to get started! 15-20 minutes and we were up and running!
Classet has been a great way to have a steady supply of candidates coming in. Sometimes I turn on Indeed and get absolutely buried and then have to switch it back off. With the cost of Classet, and steady flow of screened leads, I don’t have to worry about it. Classet is my ear on the ground for never missing qualified candidates. This is a great tool with a mid-range cost, and it gives me the confidence to know that I always have good people coming in. Set it and forget it!
How would you rate the quality of candidates you get through Classet?
For the most part, the candidates have been really solid. Obviously not every candidate is perfect, but it’s very nice to not have to go through the initial call and spend the first 10 minutes understanding their skills. Instead, I can get to know them as a person and as a fit for our company rather than spending time on the basics. It makes the call more personable, and percentage-wise, I have much more meaningful calls with candidates from Classet.
What advice would you give to a business who is potentially on the fence using Classet?
Turn it on for a month - try it! It doesn’t take long to get set up. It’s worth a trial run based on how much you are going to spend on a job board. It saves you money and it's worth a try! No brainer to try it out.
